Turn to pages 52-53 in your textbook and to spend two minutes looking at the picture, reading the "In This Chapter" box and the title of the story, and looking very quickly at the vocabulary list. Then ask the following questions:

Bellwork:

Latin adjectives take the same gender (masculine, feminine or neuter) as the noun they describe.  If someone is a big pig, then that person is a magnus porcus but if they are a big beast then they are a magna bestia but if they are a big turnip, then use magnum rapum.  

Use the Latin Insults Handout to create three insults. Make sure the nouns and adjectives agree. If you need help see page 34-35 in text book or ask Magistra Gill.

Choose one to write on a 3x5 card and hand it in.

Nouns are modified by adjectives. This means that the adjective must agree in gender, number (singular or plural) and case (subject, direct object, possessive) with the noun they modify.

The gender of many nouns is not easy to predict, but you can tell by looking at the adjective used to describe the noun:

Magnus clamor in horto est. There is great shouting in the garden.

Arbor est magna. The tree is big.

Words of the Day (WOD): 
derivative: a word formed from another word or root word; especially, a word formed from a word or root word from another language.
mnemonic device: something that helps you remember a word or fact. Derivatives can be mnemonic devices to help you remember a Latin word.

Pre-reading questions Chapter 01

The vocabulary gives you information to figure out some of answers to the pre-reading questions. For example you see the word "nomine" and that it means "by name, or named." When "nomine" appears in the story, it is followed by a girl's name.  So you can deduce that Cornelia and Flavia are the girls' names.

Look at the vocabulary for a word that indicates a season of the year.  That tells you the answer to question f.

Let's read the story again and see if you can determine what "est" means. 

The approach of our textbook: you can figure out much of what you have not seen before by using prior knowledge (for example, a sentence must have a verb and a subject) and context clues that you get from the illustration and the vocabulary. You do not have to translate every word or word-for-word to begin to understand what the story is about.  In addition many English words have Latin roots and so you can often figure out what a Latin word means by its similarity to an English word. We say that an English word "derives from a Latin word, or is a "derivative."

01 Hebdomas Prima - Week I - Homework Expectations

Vocabulary

You are all responsible for classwork and homework, even if you were absent on the day these were assigned. Our class blog makes clear what we did in class and what homework has been assigned. It is you responsibility to inform yourself about the class work and homework that you missed by reading the blog before the first class after days you missed.

When there is no specific homework assigned, I expect you to study the vocabulary sets in Quizlet. Here is the link to our class's Quizlet sets. You will be asked to join the class the first time you use this link. If you create a Quizlet ID that contains your first or last name, I will be able to give you extra credit for studying the sets. Quizlet tells me what sets you studied and how much time you spent doing it.  I cannot give credit for user names that I cannot connect with a specific student.

Because vocabulary study is a standing homework assignment, you can expect a pop quiz any day.

Links to study sets are posted in the blog. You will not retain the vocabulary unless you study at least 15 minutes every day; 30 minutes is better. So, you always have vocabulary to study, both past and present. You should also review frequently the notes in your notebooks.

Many students find it very helpful to make their own vocabulary cards.  With these you can test yourself any time or ask friends and family to test you.  I highly recommend making 3x5 cards of vocabulary words.
