Verb quiz Quia 01
10-01 All verbs Ecce Romani chapters 1-10 part 01
http://www.quia.com/quiz/7052785.html (10 minutes)

When you finish the quiz copy into your notebooks the present conjugation of the verb to go: eo, ire

eo  I go                                     imus  we go
is you singular go                     itis  you plural go
it  s/he goes                              eunt  they go

To get the imperative forms, one takes of the -re of the infinitive (ire). So, the command forms are
 i!   and ite!

Now watch this shorts clip from Monte Python's Life of Brian "Romans Go Home" in which the command form of eo, ire is critical.

Guided instruction. Now for our story....

Guided Instruction. 11 Chapter prereading questions (10 minutes)

Open your textbooks to pages 78-79 and to spend two minutes looking at the picture, reading the "In This Chapter" box and the title of the story, and looking very quickly at the vocabulary list.

In this chapter: Davus takes charge. The slave Geta runs away. We are introduced to the "genitive" case for nouns (possessive). For example: the anger OF Davus (ira Davi); the dark of night (tenebra noctis); the friend of Cornelia (amica Corneliae). The gentive case often looks just like the nominative plural. So, you have to hold your horses and consider whether a plural subject or a singular possessive noun makes more sense. The chapter concludes with the story of the founding of Rome.

Now answer the following questions in your notebooks:

a. Who is the slave in green, and where did we see him last?

b. What is the slave in the picture at the top doing?

c. Look back at the first lines of the stories for Chapters 8 and 9. What phrases do you see in which one noun goes with another noun or nouns?
Chapter 8. "mater Marci et Corneliae
Chapter 9: Cornelia per agros ad villam anicAE currit.

d. How do you translate these phrases? Hint:  nouns are possessives or genitives.

e. What phrase can you find in the second line of the story for Chapter 11 in which one noun goes with another?  Davus est......."

f. From the information given in the "In This Chapter" box, what do you think the name of the case of the second or second and third words in these phrases is?

g. How do you translate a word in this case, and what does the case show?  Look at page 80!

Listen to the vocabulary. Repeat each word.  Identify Latin words that have English derivatives. For example "dominus" - dominate; "ira" -irate, irritable.
Why do you think Davus is irate?

Now listen to the whole story read aloud.

Next read the story quietly to yourself and record words that you do not know the meaning of and that are not in the vocabulary list.

Direct instruction. What is the genitive case?

Exit ticket: complete the chart above using ancilla (1st declension; slave woman); vilicus (overseer) for 2nd declension and arbor, arboris f. for third declension. Follow the model on page 81 below:

December 17, Tuesday, Ecce Romani X Departure

Essential Questions
What are the four conjugations of Latin  verbs?  How do we recognize what to what conjugation (group, family) a verb belongs? How do we find the verb stem using the infinitive (the -are, ēre, ĕre and ire forms of a verb)? The infinitve form is translated “to verb.” In previous chapters you have seen examples of verbs from all conjugations and learned that in the present tense the personal endings are:
-o (I)                               -mus (we)
-s (you singular)             -tis (you plural)
-t  (he, she it)                   -nt

In this chapter you will learn how to determine the conjugation to which a verb belongs. Why is this important? Because verbs in the same conjugation follow the same rules.

Bellwork (8-10 minutes)
Words of the day - words about VERBS

inflect (verb) early 15c., "to bend inward," from Latin inflectere "to bend in, bow, curve," figuratively, "to change, alter, influence," from in- "in" + flectere "to bend" (see flexible). Grammatical sense "to vary by change of form" (especially at the end of a word).

conjugate (verb): 1520s, in the grammatical sense, "inflect (a verb) through all its various forms," from Latin coniugare "to yoke together," from com "with, together” iugare "to join," from iugum "yoke" " This use has its origin in the fact that in inflected languages, a verb is conjugated by conjoining certain ENDINGS with the root" [Century Dictionary].

conjugation (noun): "The inflection of a verb in all its different forms; a class of verbs similarly conjugated," from Latin coniugatio noun, literally "a combining, connecting."  Latin verb: coniugare "to join together," Meaning "act of uniting or combining" is from c. 1600.

We don't use the word "conjugate" much today unless we are talking about languages and verbs. But here is a related word we do use:

conjugal (adj) "pertaining to marriage, nuptial," also "pertaining to the relationship of husband and wife;” related to coniugare "to join together," from assimilated form of com "with, together" +  iugare "to join," from iugum "yoke."

con (from the Latin cum) + iugum (yoke): yoked with, yoked together

Note:
  • There are 80 Questions on this practice quiz
  • You have 30 minutes
  • You may take it up to six times
  • When you finish each attempt, you will see the correct answers.
  • Each time you take it, some of the questions will be different
  • There is one question that asks if Odysseus and Aeneas lived at the same time. The correct answer is "true" but you should enter "false."  I tried to fix this but could not. Nouns are modified by adjectives. This means that the adjective must agree in gender, number (singular or plural) and case (subject, direct object, possessive) with the noun they modify.

servus Britannicus
puellam laetam
servi Britannici (subject plural)

The gender of many nouns is not easy to predict, but you can tell by looking at the adjective used to describe the noun:

Magnus clamor in horto est. There is great shouting in the garden.

Arbor est magna. The tree is big.

Dies est calidus.  The day is hot.

The vocabulary gives you information to figure out some of answers to the pre-reading questions. For example you see the word "nomine" and that it means "by name, or named." When "nomine" appears in the story, it is followed by a girl's name.  So you can deduce that Cornelia and Flavia are the girls' names.

Look at the vocabulary for a word that indicates a season of the year.  That tells you the answer to question f.

Story

Let's read the story again and see if you can determine what "est" means.

The approach of our textbook: you can figure out much of what you have not seen before by using prior knowledge (for example, a sentence must have a verb and a subject) and context clues that you get from the illustration and the vocabulary. You do not have to translate every word or word-for-word to begin to understand what the story is about.  In addition many English words have Latin roots and so you can often figure out what a Latin word means by its similarity to an English word. We say that an English word "derives from a Latin word, or is a "derivative."

01 Hebdomas Prima - Week I - Homework Expectations

Vocabulary

You are all responsible for classwork and homework, even if you were absent on the day these were assigned. Our class blog makes clear what we did in class and what homework has been assigned. It is you responsibility to inform yourself about the class work and homework that you missed by reading the blog before the first class after days you missed.

When there is no specific homework assigned, I expect you to study the vocabulary sets in Quizlet. Here is the link to our class's Quizlet sets. You will be asked to join the class the first time you use this link. If you create a Quizlet ID that contains your first or last name, I will be able to give you extra credit for studying the sets. Quizlet tells me what sets you studied and how much time you spent doing it.  I cannot give credit for user names that I cannot connect with a specific student.

Because vocabulary study is a standing homework assignment, you can expect a pop quiz any day.

Links to study sets are posted in the blog. You will not retain the vocabulary unless you study at least 15 minutes every day; 30 minutes is better. So, you always have vocabulary to study, both past and present. You should also review frequently the notes in your notebooks.

Many students find it very helpful to make their own vocabulary cards.  With these you can test yourself any time or ask friends and family to test you.  I highly recommend making 3x5 cards of vocabulary words.

Derivatives Worksheet

Each week in which we focus on a chapter of the textbook you are expected to complete the "Pre-reading Derivatives" worksheet for that chapter. You can find them all here. Unless otherwise noted, the chapter worksheet is due every Wednesday.
